Who Broke Africa?

I’m headed to South Africa in about a week to visit our Cedar Ridge global partners, Paul and Micky Prince. It will be my third trip to the continent of Africa and my heart grows fonder each time. I also can’t help but notice it’s profound brokenness. I came across this interesting video of Micah Bournes that helps my perspective:

Cedar Ridge Mexico Trip

Thanks Scott Ulrich for posting this great video. We had a team of 87 from Cedar Ridge travel to Puerto Penasco over spring break and build homes. While some students were skiing and enjoying the beach, these were serving. Most of our adults had to take vacation time from work. I love it when people “live like that”

South Africa Video

Here is the video we played on Sunday with information about Paul and Micky Prince and their ministry, The Fold, in South Africa.

The kids at the Fold giving us a little concert for bringing over their new musical instruments. “Happy Birthday” I think.

South Africa Trip Pics

I finally got a chance to post all my South Africa pics after returning, spending a weekend of vacation with the family, then attending the North American Christian Convention in Cincinnati, OH. I was wondering why I was so tired and then I figured out of the last 26 nights I had only spent 3 of them at home in my own bed.

The pictures reflect 3 different parts of our trip.
Vaalwater – visiting Paul and Micky Prince at The Fold.
Johannesburg – visiting various ministries.
Capetown – visiting Africa International Ministries.

Out of Africa

So we didn’t have internet access the last few days and could update only via twitter. By far our Capetown stay was the most beautiful of the trip; Table Mountain, the Waterfront, Robben Island, Hout Bay. Several times I remarked to our hosts that I thought I had seen it all and then they would take us to something even better. This pic is taken on top of Table Mountain overlooking Table Bay.

After 35 hours of travel time (Capetown to Johannesburg to Washington D.C. to Tulsa) I’m glad to finally be home. Will post later on our ministry opportunities while in Capetown.

Wednesday in South Africa

We spent the day in what I thought was a small rural town outside of Johannesburg. Turned it that though it was a more rural area, the population is about one million. We were on the edge of town where a small church is ministering to people in a big way. Their ministry is to an impoverished people who live in shacks or government housing. In fact, while we were there a crowd gathered outside one of the outreach centers to hear if they were receiving a house. There were 119 homes to be given. Over 1,400 families are on the list.

The church’s outreach, led by Pastor Gift, consists of a preschool in which many of the kids are orphans and about half are HIV positive. It includes a clinic for AIDS testing and counseling, literacy training and church leadership training. Marvin did some teaching with leaders today and I helped with some of the followup questions.

Tonight, Brad and I will be helping the students at the Kempton Park church feed soup to the homeless outside the local police station (they sleep on the sidewalk there for protection). Tomorrow we fly to Capetown to visit some additional ministry sites.

South Africa Update

Had a great time today at the Pilanesberg Game Park looking at the animals.
